Muggings spike in notorious Pinetown intersections

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, W/O Muzi Maphumulo said the incidents primarily unfold during peak hour traffic.

POLICE have again urged people, especially motorists, to be vigilant and close their windows when driving through the CBD following a spate of robberies in Pinetown.

Pinetown SAPS communications officer, W/O Muzi Maphumulo, said robberies have increased in the intersections and police are getting more and more complaints of robberies.

The hotspot streets include Josiah Gumede (Old Main) Road from Anderson Street up to Crompton Street, Chancery Lane and also Kings Road.

“There are SAPS men on the street and bikers, and Metro police who are visible and patrol that area regularly, but police cannot be everywhere at the same time.”

Maphumulo said Pinetown has lots of crime hotspots and criminals pounce on innocent people when they notice that police are not around that area.

“These incidents happen mostly during peak hour traffic, the reason we request people to close their windows and lock their doors,” said Maphumulo.

The recent incident which went viral on social media last week was of a man who was attacked by two armed suspects during an attempted robbery.

The man was injured after being stabbed in his hands and was assisted by another motorist who witnessed the incident.

“A case of attempted robbery has been opened,” said Maphumulo.

Although most people said they have lost faith in police, Pinetown SAPS urged people to come forward and open cases so that they can be investigated and perpetrators can be arrested.
