Fabulous reads – Harrowing tale will set your skin a shiver

Book review - The Ones that Disappeared by Zana Fraillon.

The Ones that Disappeared, Zana Fraillon, Orion, ISBN: 978150101586

The Ones that Disappeared is the latest powerful read from Australian author, Fraillon.

We follow the harrowing tale of three children: Esra, Miran and Isa.

These three trafficked children face trial and hardships as they flee from the small comfort of the drug farm they tend.

Miran is captured by the police during their escape, which leaves Esra to care for young Isa. With the assistance of their new friend Skeet, Esra and Isa start their journey to save Miran and hopefully find their freedom.

I found this book difficult to read and complete.

It was emotionally draining and there were some hard truths to face.

There is a slight magical theme introduced that drew me away from the initial realism that was so brilliantly portrayed – so don’t be confused when it comes up!

I would give a tentative three stars for the lyrical writing style and brutally honest themes.

Fraillon addresses a number of disturbing and adult topics in the novel. While it may fall under the YA banner, I would only recommend this for adult readers.
