Villagers shut down long-time rivals

While the Westville Old Boys' RC claimed the 2nd XV win, the 1st team clash claimed the Villagers their fifth consecutive win against the club.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club took on the Westville Old Boys’ RC in a KZNRU First Division return fixture at Jimmy Bellows’ Sports Grounds in Westville on Saturday afternoon.

In the 2nd XV match, the Villagers’ side threw all they had at their hosts to try and gain dominance.

There were times where the game was evenly pitched and the result could have gone either way.

However, in the second half, Westville stamped their authority on the game and shut the visitors down with a final score of 17 – 7.

Man of the Match went to Martin Van Rooyen (forwards) and Jean Booysen (backline).

Due to the intense rivalry between the clubs, the 1st XV game gave spectators a true Derby Day and an afternoon to remember. For a portion of the game, only one point separated the two arch rivals.

Ultimately, it boiled down to the Villagers capitalising more on their possession of the ball. At the blow of the final whistle, the Villagers won 20-16.

Man of the Match went to Gavin Muir (forwards) and Keegan Jansen van Rensburg (backline).

The Villagers’ 1st and 2nd XV will take on the Balito Dolphins on Saturday afternoon at the Durban Shongweni Club from 2pm.

Envirosan-Hillcrest Villagers 3rd XV will play the Toti 3rd XV in Amanzimtoti on Friday evening. The match will kick off at 7.30pm.
