Hillcrest decimates Collegians 85-5

The 1st and 2nd teams claimed wins against the PMB Collegians in their away games last week.

THE Land Rover Durban – Hillcrest Villagers’ Rugby Club took on the PMB Collegians at away games at the Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Friday evening in their KZNRU first division encounter.

In the 2nd XV match, the Villagers established an early dominance which they held onto until the final whistle. The final score was 33 – 0 to Hillcrest. Man of the Match went to Greg Nortje (forwards) and Jean Booysen (backline).

The 1st XV match was a one-sided affair from the outset as the visitors completely outclassed their opposition in all aspects of the game.

For Hillcrest, it presented the opportunity to give its reserve bench much needed match time and experiment with various combinations. Skipper, Henkie Groenewald, made a welcome return from injury playing as flank instead of his regular position of inside centre.

At the blow of the final whistle the scoreboard was 85 – 5.

At the after-match function, head coach, Mike de Kock, congratulated his side on their win, but warned that tougher encounters lay in wait for both sides as the league moved towards mid-season. Man of the Match went to Henkie Groenewald (forwards) and Tyler Smith (backline).

Envirosan Hillcrest Villagers’ 3rd XV played their third fixture of the KZNRU’s 4th division against the visiting Crusaders 3rd XV.

The game was a hugely close encounter but the Villagers wasted opportunities to score and the game boiled down to the side who could retain possession.

With only an unconverted try separating them after 80 minutes, the final score was 20-15 to Crusaders. Man of the Match was Justin Allison (forwards) and Warrick McQuirk (backline).

The Villagers’ 3rds will play DUT Rhinos RC at Durban Shongweni Club on Thursday, 10 May from 7pm. The Villagers’ 1sts and 2nds will take on UKZN at Howard College on Saturday from 2pm.
