WESTVILLE Detective/Sergeant, Philani Dumakude, was commended by his station for his perseverance and commitment in securing a three-year conviction for assault with grievous bodily harm in 2015 for five staff members of Checkers Hyper in Pavillion.

Capt Elizabeth Squires said the victim, 30-year old Nkosikhona Mayakona from Chesterville, was employed by Checkers Hyper in Pavillion in March 2015. He was allegedly accused of stealing cheese and trying to conceal it in a Corn Flakes box.
“The victim was taken into the security office, handcuffed and was severely assaulted and taken to Addington Hospital for treatment. A case of Assault GBH was opened as the victim suffered severe head injuries,” said Squires.
She said D/Sergeant Philani Dumakude was appointed as the investigating officer and was commended for his thorough investigation to ensure justice was served.
In another incident, D/Sergeant Sibongiseni Ngcobo, secured a life sentence conviction for a murder that occurred in January 2016 at Westville Prison. It is believed an argument broke out between two offenders at the prison.

One offender stabbed the deceased several times with a knife in the neck, rib cage, left arm and back.
