Community support flows in for pipeline project

After battling with burst water pipes and water outages for months, the eThekwini Municipality has started its infrastructure upgrade in the Waterfall area.

AFTER enduring months of burst pipes and water outages, Niagara Road residents can soon rest easy as the eThekwini Municipality is in the process of upgrading the infrastructure. The work started on 28 February and will continue until 30 June.

In a notice to residents, the municipality stated that every effort would be made to maintain an uninterrupted water supply, but there would be occasions when this would unavoidable.

The DA PR councillor for the area, Tex Collins, highlighted the relief the residents felt when the project was announced.

“The residents have been extremely patient as the city eventually realised there was a major problem in the area. This is only the first stage of the project,” he said.

Tex said that while the project was a welcome relief, he urged the City to continue to monitor the pressure levels in the pipes and should possibly look at installing pressure release valves.

“The community definitely needs to be commended for their incredible patience,” he said.

“eThekwini Municipality is running this project themselves and it is going smoothly and the work is being done properly. It is hugely important that the competency levels of subcontracts used on other projects in the area are up to speed and task,” he concluded.

Local resident, Dwain Dreyer, said the project was a welcome one, but he would continue to log water outages and pipe bursts in the area through a WhatsApp group he created last year.

“I would like to thank all of the residents of Ward 9 that have been so supportive during the last couple of months in this fight. It has been really heartwarming to know I am part of such an amazing community and going forward I will support them where I can and voice their concerns to the council to try and get service delivery standards picked up in the area,” said Dreyer.
