Suspect sneaks firearm into Westville SAPS holding cells, threatens suicide

The police managed to negotiate with the suspect and he was later disarmed.

KWAZULU-Natal police are conducting an internal investigation into how a suspect landed in the Westville police cells with a firearm on Monday, 26 March.

Captain Nqobile Gwala, spokesperson for KZN police, said it is alleged that Westville police arrested a 38-year-old suspect for bilking at a business premises in Westville around 6pm yesterday.

Later that night, the police received an anonymous call informing them that the person in the holding cells had a firearm.

“Backup was called and he was asked to declare if he had a firearm in his possession, he drew it out and pointed it on his forehead. The police managed to negotiate with the suspect and he was later disarmed,” said Gwala.

She said the suspect will appear at the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court today for theft, which is being investigated by Westville SAPS.
