M19 serial rapist returns

This is the second case reported in this area this year, but the management at Westville SAPS have strategies in place to ensure the rapist is arrested.

THE Highway serial rapist is on the prowl again with his latest victim being a 58-year-old woman who was found, naked and bound, by a motorist on the M19 last Thursday.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, confirmed that the incident took place on the M19 before Aylesbury Bridge, Pinetown-bound, where a 58-year-old woman was raped by a man who promised her employment on Thursday, 8 March.

It is believed the woman took a taxi from Durban to the M19 where the man was waiting for her.

He told the victim they were going to meet her new employer. They walked a distance into bush where he raped her and took her belongings.

“The suspect raped the victim and left her in the bushes,” said communications officer at Westville SAPS, Capt Elizabeth Squires, who confirmed the victim was naked and bound at the time. She managed to find her way back onto the M19 where she was picked up by a motorist and brought to the station.

“Charges of rape and robbery were opened at Westville SAPS. We urge members of the public especially women to be cautious of such scams,” said Gwala.

Squires added this is not a new modus operandi and the rapist is still using the M19.

The Highway Mail published an article about women who claimed they were lured for employment opportunities and then raped by the notorious M19 rapist last year.

An aerial search was launched to locate the perpetrator but he was never found. It is believed that the information leaked about him on social media alerted him to the search and he went into hiding until now.

Squires said this is the second case reported in this area this year, but the management at Westville SAPS have strategies in place to arrest the rapist.

“The Westville community should not live in fear. Victims are from other areas seeking domestic employment,” said Squires.
