WBHS record 11th unbeaten season for swimming

WBHS won every U14, U15, U16 and U17 race with two new records being broken in the U14 age group. WBHS now holds every record on the D&D swimming programme.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School ended its 2018 swimming season with an emphatic win at the Durban and Districts (D&D) Gala, an 11th record win for the school.

WBHS has dominated relay swimming in both KZN and Gauteng boys’ high schools, have not lost a gala anywhere in those areas since March 2007 and have now gone 75 galas without defeat.

The Durban and Districts (D&D) gala is part of a large group of galas under the D&D banner. Primary schools in three divisions, girl’s high schools, co-ed high schools and boy’s high schools all compete for the D&D trophies on offer. The original boy’s high school trophy was part of a series of individual galas used to select the KZN Schools swimming teams but in the late 70s, the D&D format changed to relays only and the present format has prevailed. The headmasters of the schools have decided to change the qualification criteria from the usual promotion relegation for teams and B teams were not allowed to compete against the A teams again.

WBHS won every U14, U15, U16 and U17 race with two new records being broken in the U14 age group and now holds every record on the D&D swimming programme.

This is no mean feat, as the gala has been going for nearly 60 years and to break a record nowadays means a team must be faster than previous teams that were composed of swimmers, some of whom went on to become Olympians.

The U16 backstroke team were disqualified due to a stroke technicality and WBHS did not lose another race on the evening.

The U17 fly team (Bromfield, Burgess, Bosch, Rayment) broke the only 4 men record on the night and the five-age ladder (Holtzhausen, Brijlal, Mayer, Bosch, Robinson) ended the evening breaking the record in the last event of the evening.

Official results:

Westville Boys High School – 150
Clifton – 110
Glenwood High School – 96
Kearsney College – 80
Northwood School – 52
Durban High School – 39
