New Germany scout drives a water campaign

Rhys Evans hopes to collect and donate over 50 000 bottles of water to people living in the drought stricken city of Cape Town.

ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD, Rhys Evans from New Germany started a campaign to collect bottled water to send to Cape Town after hearing about the crisis they are facing.

Rhys, who is part of the 1st Cowies Hill Air Scouts Troop, said his heart was in pain when he saw on television (and listened to the radio) how people and animals on farms are suffering from dehydration.

“The people are being severely affected from the lack of water resources and limited to 25 litres of water per day for cleaning themselves, cleaning homes and keeping themselves hydrated. This makes me sad,” he said.

To help him make a difference, Rhys asked the Water from Air Foundation to help his campaign which is to collect bottled water to send to Cape Town.

“My idea is to ask our entire scout, cub and Meerkat district in KwaZulu-Natal, to buy a bottle of water from the Water from Air Foundation and donate it to the campaign and ask that all the bottles of water bought, be couriered to Cape Town.

“I have made contact with a scout troop in Edgemead who are willing to come on board to receive the water and distribute it where it is needed such as the rural and underprivileged areas. It is just a little help, but if everyone helps a little bit at a time, a huge positive outcome will happen,” he said.

Water from Air Foundation loved the idea and were eager to help as they also transported water to assist in Cape Town. They gave Rhys a homework assignment to research the company and in return they will cover the transportation costs.

Rhys needs to collect 51 408 bottles, this will be 68 pallets of 500ml water bottles

“They have also allowed us to put our logo onto the bottle and that cost is included in the R10,” said the excited Rhys.
