WATCH: Swift police action leads to house robbers’ arrest within minutes of crime

Four men, all aged 20 years old, were charged for house robbery. The case has been registered at Westville SAPS.

A COMBINED effort by Westville SAP Crime Prevention, Durban Flying Squad and Shongweni Dog Unit has yielded excellent results once again, after four house robbers were arrested within minutes of committing a crime earlier today.

Capt Elizabeth Squires, communications officer at Westville SAPS, said a 11-year-old boy was outside opening the garage at his home in Kinley Place early this morning, ready to go to school, when he was confronted by four men armed with screwdrivers and knives.

Squires said the family were about to leave for school.

The 45-year old woman heard her son scream, ran to the garage and saw the armed robbers.

The woman and her son were assaulted by the robbers who forced them into the house, where they demanded cash, jewellery and cell- phones. They tied up the victim and her using a dog leash while they ransacked the rest of the house.

Soon afterwards, the domestic worker arrived and entered the house. The armed robbers assaulted her as well and then demanded to know where the safe, gold and cash were.

“The armed men started loading items into the victim’s Black Mercedes Benz, they took the remote and pressed the panic alarm. SAPS members were patrolling and responded to a house robbery in progress. As the members arrived they saw the four men inside the yard. Two of them ran from the house and got into a taxi,” said Squires.

Constable Wynand Laatz, Const Alisha Coles, Const Sandile Cele and const Nkosinathi Dlamini from Westville Crime Prevention gave chase and stopped the taxi near Spar in Roger Sishi Road.

“Two of the men found in the taxi were arrested. The other two suspects jumped over the wall and ran towards Palmiet River. Members from Flying Squad, W/O David Bramley, Sgt Andre Swanepoel and Sgt Andries Hlope from Shongweni Dog Unit saw the other two suspects running along the river. They gave chase on foot and apprehended the suspects,” said Squires.

Four men, all aged 20 years old, have been arrested. A case of house robbery has been registered at Westville SAPS.
