Durban police nab gang of robbers in Westville

Among the four arrested suspects is a police official stationed in Pietermaritzburg.

THE DURBAN Flying Squad, Pinetown Trio Task Team and the Shongweni K9 Unit nabbed a gang of robbers believed to be linked to a number of crimes in the Highway area.

Capt Nqobile Gwala of the KZN SAPS said members of the Durban Flying Squad acted on intelligence driven information about the alleged robbers,  in a white Hyundai Accent with police registration plates. They were on route to commit a robbery in the Westville area around 3.20pm yesterday.

“With the assistance of the Pinetown Trio Task Team and Shongweni K9 unit members, the said vehicle with four occupants was intercepted at the corner of Rockdale Avenue and Tweed Road.  The occupants were searched and house breaking implements such as crowbar, balaclava, glove and other items were found in their possession,” said Gwala.

She added that an unlicensed firearm with a serial number filed off was also confiscated by the team.

“Investigations were conducted at the scene and it revealed that the alleged suspects were using the fake police plates. A total of four suspects aged between 24 and 34 were placed under arrest. Among the arrested suspects is a police official stationed in Pietermaritzburg,” added Gwala. 

Charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property and possession of house breaking implements are being investigated by Westville SAPS.
