Kearsney celebrates double win against Clifton

Kearsney won by four wickets in the cricket match against Clifton, and beat Clifton 77-27 on the basketball courts.

SATURDAY’S fixture between Kearsney College and Clifton College saw two competent cricket sides vying for the win.

Kearsney won the toss and put Clifton in on a decent track in hot conditions.

Clifton was in trouble throughout, but stoic resistance from Montgomery (27), Elgar (23) and Holmes (34) all contributed to a reasonable total of 177. Twenty-five extras from Kearsney’s bowlers certainly assisted the Clifton cause. Carl Heunis (4/26) and Brien (3/49) were the main destroyers, with Kearsney’s other bowlers playing a holding role.

Set a tricky target, Kearsney were also in trouble at 96/6 with Holmes (3/30) bowling quickly and aggressively and Montgomery (2/42) bowling controlled spin.

Kearsney eventually made 178/6 with William Patton (57*) and Michael Brokensha (35*) producing a significant eighth wicket partnership. Gouveia (33) was the only top order batsman to have made a significant contribution.

Kearsney won by four wickets in an entertaining encounter played in the true spirit of cricket, with no quarter given on either side.

The final scores: Clifton 1st X1 – 177/10 (Holmes 32; Heunis 4/26; Brien 3/49), and Kearsney 1st X1 – 180/6 (Patton 57 no; Brokensha 33 no; Gouveia 33; Holmes 3/31).

Basketball

As hosts, Kearsney’s 1st team started off poorly, struggling to get into a rhythm offensively but were able to compensate for this with some good defense. Clifton however opened the scoring with a three-point shot, which got their supporters excited and vocal. Kearsney came alive, offensively scoring 15 unanswered points during the rest of the first quarter.

The second quarter was much of the same with Kearsney dominating both ends of the floor. Clifton found it difficult to score because of the stifling Kearsney defense which put them under pressure, never allowing an easy open shot. At half-time Kearsney lead 37-9.

The third quarter was much of the same, with Kearsney scoring 23 points to Clifton’s 5.

The coach was then able to run a number of his bench players in the fourth quarter, which led to a breaking of the flow for Kearsney. It allowed Clifton to have their best quarter, scoring 13 points with some poor marking and decisions on defence. Kearsney were poor on offence and were unable to convert a number of open shots.

Kearsney ran out comfortable winners 77-27.
