Local animal organisations unite for conference

If you are volunteering at an animal rights organisation or just want to learn more about the work done by the various NPOs, book your seat now.

RESERVE your seat for the Rescue Organisation’s Educational Conference (ROEC) on Saturday, 10 February at Butlers in Hillcrest from 8.30am.

This conference was the brainchild of Carla Raaths, one of the lead volunteers of Mazarat Animal Rescue based in waterfall.

The event is a first of its kind in KZN and plans to be an annual one along the same lines of continuous education for the people involved in all aspects of rescue across the province.

“ROEC was born of a need to unite and educate people in animal rescue organisations on aspects of legal rulings, health, safety and training for volunteers. The tools we have at our disposal, those we don’t, and a positive way forward,” said Carla Raaths.

There will be four guest speakers: Dale Neves of the French Bulldog Association of South Africa. Dale will talk about the brachycephalic breathing issues which cause many flat nosed breeds to be surrendered and or require surgery to live healthy lives.

Cheri Cooke of the Kloof and Highway SPCA will give a talk on the Animal Protection Act and its enforcement.

Sr Kathryn Landman of Pet First Aid South Africa will give a talk on assessing and administering first aid and enabling time to get to vets for treatment.

Mandy Barrett and Taylar Callaway of Rescue-ology SA, behaviourist and dog trainers, will discuss the correct personality and behavioural assessments that are used to rehome dogs.

“There are many rescue organisations across KZN. Some are registered organisations and some are private good Samaritans but all with the same objective, rescue the abandoned, injured, dying and lost pets to helping, treat, rehabilitate and rehome these animals.

“Our role is to also create awareness of rescue adoption. There are just not enough homes for the number of rescued animals, and that’s a fact. So if knowledge is power, then education is key, enter ROEC,” concluded Carla.

The sponsors of the event are Regal Pet Health Products and Montego. The entry fee is R50 per person and includes refreshments.

A portion of the sales will go to an animal welfare organisation.
