Ongoing pipe bursts damage Westville road

The pipe in High Wycombe Road has burst more than eight time in two months.

RESIDENTS’ properties have been damaged and thousands of litres of water wasted due to a pipe that keeps bursting in High Wyecombe Road, Westville.

The pipe has burst more than eight times in two months and a resident has cordoned off one side of the road which has holes caused by these bursts.

Professor Manoj Maharaj, who had to hire people to clean-up the sand from his yard, said they always wonder when the pipe is going to burst again.

“I reported the burst pipe via WhatApp and send pictures every time. The water gushes out, sometimes for hours, until a plumber arrives.

“This has caused consequent damage to my property as the sand, left when they were fixing the road, washes into my yard almost every time this pipe bursts. One of my neighbour’s fence is on the verge of collapsing because of this matter,” said Maharaj.

He said someone needs to take responsibility for this and get to the root of this problem before it causes excessive damage.

“We have gone through official channels with no success. I was also told to lodge a claim because of the sand, but no one has contacted me about cleaning up my yard or reimbursing me.

“Recently, I took it upon myself to cordon off an area of the road damaged by water to protect pedestrians, cyclists and motorists who could get injured,” said Maharaj.

He said in a recent incident, the burst pipe caused some parts of the road to sink as it was leaking from underground.

The Highway Mail asked the municipality for comment, but had not received it by the time of going to print.
