Westville Methodist Church celebrates 40 years

The thriving Methodist community celebrated four decades at their new building at a packed service on 19 November.

WESTVILLE Methodist Church celebrated 40 years at its current building this year.

When the Methodists in Westville built their first church in Buckingham Terrace in 1954, they never imagined that in a little over 20 years, it would be demolished.

A developer purchased a large swathe of land to develop the Westville Mall (Checkers centre).

Many lovely homes were demolished in 1976 in Menston and Kensington Roads.

Other houses and the church were also torn down in Buckingham Terrace which was realigned. Where the church once stood is now part of the parking area for the shopping centre.

For a while, church services were held at Westville Girls’ High School as the new church buildings at 38 Jan Hofmeyr Road were not completed until November 1977.

Forty years later, the thriving Methodist community celebrated four decades at their new building at a packed service on 19 November.

Both Ministers, Ingbert Misselhorn and Mark Wiemers, led the Anniversary Thanksgiving.

After the service, a lavish high tea awaited the celebratory parishioners.
