Flames of memory burn bright for HACT staff

In recognition of World AIDS Day on 1 December, HACT hosted a moving candle lighting ceremony at its Respite Unit.

TEARS were shed and hugs were shared during a moving candle-lighting ceremony at the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust to commemorate World AIDS Day last Friday.

“This is something we deal with every day at HACT,” said the organisation’s CEO, Candace Davidson.

“This is an issue the world over that needs to be addressed. We need to turn off the tap and we have a large basin to fill here in South Africa.”

Even though South Africa accounts for less than one per cent of the global population, it holds 18 per cent of the global HIV burden with approximately seven million South Africans infected with HIV.

HACT’s CEO, Candace Davidson, with one of the 75 candles that were lit in remembrance of the patients who passed away in the centre’s Respite Unit.

“We are sitting in the hot spot for HIV and have been here for 27 years, but the work we do cannot and will not stop. We promote unconditional love and give hope and create a second chance at life. This day gives us a moment to pause and reflect and ask ourselves what we will be doing going forward.

“We have come to remember the 75 people who have passed away in our Respite Unit since World AIDS Day last year,” said Candace.

She described the patients as courageous, brave and filled with joy.

“These candles represent a battle that has been lost. HIV/AIDS may take a life but it doesn’t take away who a person was.”

Key Trucks New Germany donated goodie bags to the Respite Unit’s 24 patients and Compass Medical Waste Services provided iced, decorated red velvet cupcakes for the patients, staff and supporters of HACT.
