Selfless Les receives prestigious Rotary award

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest presented Les Moffatt, a civilian, with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship Award in recognition for selfless service to the community.

THE Rotary Club of Hillcrest together with Hillcrest High School hosted a fund-raiser for former teacher, Les Moffatt, at the school on Saturday night.

Cancer survivor, Les, was involved in a serious accident in July last year when she was struck by a taxi in Pinetown while crossing the road.

She suffered severe brain injury.

After months in hospital and rigorous rehabilitation at Headway-Natal in Westville, Les is back on her feet.

She is being treated for Aphasia and is undergoing physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy on her road to recovery.

The picnic dinner and evening of music by Rowan Stuart was held to raise much needed funds for Les’s escalating medical costs and any other support she may need.

Bryan Moffatt, Les’s son and teacher in charge of the Interact Club at the school, said Les has been affiliated with Hillcrest High School for the past 20 years or so.

She has spent the last 10 or so of those years being the driving force behind the Interact Club at the school, the youth arm of the Rotary Club of Hillcrest.

“In that time, Les has touched many people’s lives with her never-ending commitment to the community. In her time as head of Interact she took on many worthwhile projects that proved fruitful – taking on two orphanages, arranging numerous clothing and food donations, upgrading various areas such as the wheelchair ramps at the White House, where Sithembakuye had turned their orphanage into an old age home as well,” said Bryan.

He added that there are countless other examples of Les’s giving through the Interact Club that are fantastic examples of her character. “Les is a true inspiration to us all and deserves all of the praise that comes her way.”

Rob Campbell, the president of the Hillcrest Rotary Club presented Les Moffat with a Paul Harris Fellowship award, the highest award in Rotary.

“Les received this award in recognition of her accomplishments in the community which ties in with the Rotary’s perspective, Service above Self which shows consideration towards one’s fellow human beings and those less fortunate than oneself, which she has instilled in our young Rotary Interactors,” said Campbell.

Moffat said: “I thank the Lord for every single person who has helped me along the way. I wouldn’t have been here today if it weren’t for them. Your prayers and support has been truly inspiring and definitely appreciated. Thank you.”
