Fabulous reads – Suspense-filled tale will not disappoint

Book review - The Black Book by James Patterson and David Ellis.

The Black Book, James Patterson and David Ellis, Penguin Random House, ISBN: 9781 7808 95321

This is a brilliant “whodunit” that culminates in a solid, dependable crime and suspense novel from an old favourite. Patterson himself labelled The Black Book his best work in 20 years and die-hard fans everywhere are applauding nonetheless.

Imagine waking up with a gunshot wound to the head and no memory of the events leading up to and including the shootout that left your girlfriend and police partner dead. Detective Billy Harney is the number one suspect in a double murder and has no recollection of the events leading up to the fateful day that changed his life. The narration jumps back and forth from past to present as Billy and his detective twin sister, Patti, wade through the events to prove his possible innocence. With crooked state attorneys, illegal brothels, prostitute rings and a missing Little Black Book bearing the truth – you know you are in for a thrilling ride. A fantastic fictional rendition of dirty cops and insider information.

I found this to be a totally engrossing read as you discover the truth alongside the main suspect. This was such an enjoyable fast-paced book with generally likeable characters and a neat, satisfying ending. You may feel slightly windswept at the conclusion of such whirlwind novel, but it will be totally worth it. A solid five-star read.
