Pinetown Mortuary worker arrested for fraud

It is alleged the mortuary worker and his accomplice, a petrol garage employee profited from the fraudulent processing of payments for fuel bought for Departmental vehicles.

A PETROL card fraud case involving a Pinetown Mortuary worker and a petrol garage employee was cracked by the Health Department’s Internal Audit and Risk Management unit.

The two men were arrested by Westville SAPS last week after an investigation by the Department, and appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 July.

KZN Department of Health spokesman, Desmond Motha said it is alleged the two men had devised a plan where they were profiting from the fraudulent processing of payments for fuel bought for Departmental vehicles and they would then share the money among themselves.

“The men were not asked to plead, and will remain in custody until Monday, 7 August where they will appear again in court for their formal bail applications,” said Motha.

Health MEC, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said they certainly welcome this arrest, and hope that it will send a strong message to employees of the Department and anyone else who wishes to collude with them to commit crime.

“There is simply no room for fraudulent or corrupt activities in the Department. We are tired of people who abuse and squander scarce government resources for their own narrow and selfish ends,” said Dhlomo.

He added that the Department would like to issue a warning to those who are engaged in such practices or who are planning to do so, that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.
