Kloof Rotary fulfils dream with donation

Obed Mlaba Technical High School in Inchanga now has their own beautiful toilets.

ON Friday, 9 June was a day of celebration at Obed Mlaba Technical High School in Inchanga.

Principal, George Shau, who mentioned his dream about creating a technical high school for learners in the area 10 years ago, was able to fulfil his vision.

By sheer persistence, he managed to get the education department to supply five prefabricated classrooms late last year but there were no toilets.

Supported by the local community, the school committee raised R20 000 to start building two toilet blocks, however they ran out of funds and expertise.

“This was when the Rotary Club of Kloof stepped in. Led by president Don Perks and Rotarian Peter Scorgie, a team of willing local workers have completed the toilet blocks at a cost of R180 000 funded by Kloof Rotary,” said Kloof Rotary board member, Selwyn Comrie.

Shau expressed his gratitude to the Rotary Club of Kloof and said ‘history has been made’.

“We are overjoyed by this donation. We have been waiting for toilets since 2015 and we had to place learners at Steven Davison Primary School in 2016 to date.

“The toilet blocks were officially handed over on Friday, 9 June and the new premises was operational on the same day.

“The learners now have their own school with beautiful toilets which have been engineered and supervised closely by Don Perks and Peter Scorgie who dedicated their time to make sure the dream of these learners are realised.

“We are so thankful to them in particular because they empowered the community by promoting the use of local labour and they taught them how to build septic tanks and sockaways,” said Shau.
