Determined patroller finds Ashley garden furniture thief in river

Patrollers arrested the man after a three-hour search.

NEIGHBOURHOOD watches joined a search for a thief who was spotted with garden furniture in Mariannhill Road, Ashley earlier today.

A New Germany Neighbourhood Watch patroller was driving along Mariannhill Road when he saw a suspicious man carrying four garden chairs.

The patroller stopped his car and the man dropped the chairs and ran into a property.

Ashley Neighbourhood Watch member, Joe Ribeiro, said she had just left her home when she saw the patroller chasing the man.

“I put it out on Neighbourhood Watches’ communication networks and patrollers from different areas came to assist and we cordoned off the area,” Ribeiro.

The patrollers searched many properties and guarded the area for almost two hours before calling off the search.

“One of our patrollers, however, was adamant and stood there for another hour and eventually spotted the man in Retief Street.”

The message was again broadcast and the search resumed.

Ribeiro said residents alerted patrollers that the man was hiding in Voortrekker Road river.

“The man was finally arrested by a member of the Glenpark Neighbourhood Watch,” she said.
