Glenwood thrash Kearsney in weekend fixtures

Glenwood 1st XV scored 59-7 against Kearsney in rugby and the teams drew their hockey match, 2-2.

KEARSNEY College hosted the powerhouse of KZN schools on a pleasant afternoon with conditions ideal for rugby.

The hosts started well but often spilled the ball in contact against the well-conditioned and physical 1st XI Glenwood outfit. Glenwood however used their opportunities and scored four converted tries unanswered to lead 28-nil at half time.

Kearsney fought back at the start of the second half but a run-away Glenwood try certainly dampened the hosts’ spirit.

The visitors found their straps and created spectacular opportunities with precision passing and acute running angles.

They scored a further three converted and two other tries for an impressive nine tries for the match.

The hosts managed a try by substitute Matt du Toit after some good phase play. Fly half Jacques Odendaal converted.

Kearsney battled with the physicality in the contact areas and their defence was not of the usual high standard.

Kearsney lock Ross Taylor and centre James Sutherland played well and Taylor in particular gave his best until the final whistle. Glenwood were victorious at 59-7.

Hockey

Kearsney boys took on Glenwood in what was always going to be a tough game.

The game started off well for Kearsney, as they created many scoring opportunities with David Hudson eventually getting on to the end of a Kyle Koenig pass, to tap into the far post and put Kearsney 1-0 up.

Glenwood however stayed in the game and started to put together their own chances and were able to pull one back moments before halftime.

Kearsney came out much stronger in the second half and dictated most of the play but somehow just couldn’t convert any of their chances. Glenwood were awarded a penalty stroke with three minutes to play and converted to go 2-1 up.

From this position, most teams would have found it very hard to “pick it up” and fight back to get something out of the game.

But the Kearsney hosts played with full belief that no matter the time or score, they would fight back.

This was evident in how Kearsney fought in the last two minutes to win themselves a penalty corner which was converted by captain Jeremy Foord to draw the game 2-2.
