HACT’s gogolympics draws international support

The KwaMashu grannies team were this year's winners.

THE Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT) annual unique event was a success once again with grannies from KwaMashu being the overall winners.

The 2017 Gogolympics event held at Molweni Sports Ground attracted new participants from other communities across the province and from overseas.

The grannies competed in many exciting games which included rugby ball, ring sticks, netball and soccer.

Matilda Shozi (88) from KwaNyuswa was the oldest granny who competed in the event.

Mavis Mbhele (70) goalkeeper for KwaNyuswa soccer team said every year she looks forward to this tournament.

“In our area, we started a team in 2006 after HACT’s Gogo Support Groups Manager, Cwengi Myeni told us that we, as grannies, should get together and do something positive rather than sitting at home thinking about our problems. Ever since I joined these support groups I am stress free as we talk about our issues and we are involved in lots of programmes,” said Mbhele.

Myeni said the atmosphere and level of competition at this year’s event was outstanding and they were very proud of all the gogos for the hard work and many hours of practice they have put in in the lead up to this year’s event.

“We would like to thank all our event sponsors and partners, including our main donors, the DG Murray Trust, the African Women’s Development Fund and the Diaconal Dutch Volunteer Group from De Bilt in the Netherlands,” she said.
