Sports mad doctor laces up for Comrades

The Kloof resident has a passion for the outdoors, keeping fit, staying healthy and sports. Her dream of running her first Comrades Marathon is near.

GROWING up in the Highway area, Dr Jade Redman has watched the Comrades Marathon for as long as she can remember and this year will lace up to compete in the gruelling 86km event.

The 27-year-old said it was her dream to one day take part in the event and is excited that race day is only a month away.

Throughout her school career she was always interested in sports and enjoyed taking part in triathlons and cross country.

In 2013 she completed the Milands Ultra, in 2015 she took part in the Ironman challenge and last year geared up for the Wattera, the Lesotho Ultra as well as the Dusi.

Taking advantage of early mornings and late evenings, is how she manages to fit in the training for the events as well as her studies and part-time work.

She completed her studies in 2015 and opened up her chiropractic practice, Redman Chiropractic.

Even with a bustling business to run, Dr Redman is still able to fit in the training and her commitment to her beloved cross country team at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof.

She has started running up to 100km per week over six days.

“My ultimate goal is to finish the race but, to be on the competitive side, I would like to beat my brother Ryan’s first Comrades’ time of 10 hours and 58 minutes,” she laughed.

She generally eats healthily so did not start a special diet when her Comrades training began. When asked what her cheat meal is, she laughed and said, “My weakness lies with chocolate and doughnuts.”

In her downtime she enjoys curling up with a good book, going to the beach and with the help of her boyfriend, Storm, she surfs.

In a rare weekend off she recently went to the Transkei and instead of waking up late and lounging around, she did paddle-boarding, kayaking, hiking and cliff jumping.
