New station commander to lead Westville SAPS

Col Zwelakhe Zondi spent his 29-year policing career in Vispol Policing which he believes is his strong point.

ACTION speaks louder than words for Westville SAPS’s new station commander, Col Zwelakhe Zondi, who was appointed on promotion.

With only three weeks into his new position, he said he strongly believes in doing things rather then talking about it and is determined to curb the recent crime wave Westville has been experiencing.

Zondi joined the police force in 1988 at Sanab (a special unit dealing with drugs) in Port Shepstone.

He then moved to Margate police station from 1989 to 1995.

In 1995 he became the Hillcrest SAPS commander of the community service centre and later joined the Pinetown Cluster (now known as the eThekwini Inner and Outerwest) in 2009 as the Vispol coordinator to date.

Between 2005 and 2009, Zondi worked short spells as the station commander at Cato Manor SAPS and acting station commander at Hillcrest SAPS.

“I have been in Vispol during my 29-year career in the force, and believe that it is my strong point,” said Zondi.

He said with every new post, there are challenges to face but fortunately is aware of the situation in Westville and is already addressing certain issues.

“Westville SAPS has a good component of CPF, neighbourhood watches, security companies and the police. I believe in working together in a coordinated fashion towards one common goal,” said Zondi.

During the first two weeks of his appointment at Westville SAPS, Zondi identified Berea West as a problem area and has already taken steps to address it.

“The police organisation is based on discipline and without discipline one can not conduct their work properly. In my books discipline and respect is virtue and that’s what I would like to promote here at the station. However, I don’t want people to think I’m unapproachable. My doors are always open for any inquiry,” said Zondi.

Zondi also described himself as a family man. He is married to Thembi, and has a son and two daughters and live in Crestholme.

He said he used to be a great soccer player but has turned in his soccer boots for family time.

He still has interests in the sport though and encouraged his members to participate in all codes of sport to keep their mind clear and focused.

His message to the community is: “Let’s work hand-in-hand and support each other in combating crime.”
