‘The success of a neighbourhood watch is teamwork’ – Escombe Neighbourhood Watch

"We encourage members to attend our monthly meetings which take place every third Thursday of each month at the Shell Hole Moth in Malvern," - Don Maskell.

THE Escombe Neighbourhood Watch treasurer, Don Maskell, believes neighbourhood watch groups help reduce crime by observing and reporting crime and suspicious activity in the area.

Maskell has been a resident of Queensburgh for more than 20 years and joined the neighbourhood watch when it was established in 2015.

“When I moved, there was no neighbourhood watch,” said Maskell, who is in charge of the patrol team as well as performing other treasurer duties.

The effective tools of information sharing the watch uses are Whatsapp and Facebook.

Maskell said the job of the neighbourhood watch is to ‘observe and report’.

“We let the police know about what is happening but do not get involved physically.”

The patrol team meets a couple of times a month to get information and share ideas with security companies.

“When people see us around the neighbourhood, they want to know more and they want to get involved, and this is how we get most of our members.”

He added that the neighbourhood watch is a team effort and is about neighbours looking after each other.
