Five runners head for 40th Comrades run

There are currently only 12 other runners in the world who have completed 40 or more Comrades Marathon races.

FIVE passionate Comrades Marathon runners will aim for their 40th Comrades finish at this year’s 92nd Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 4 June 2017.

Mike Cowling, Wietsche van der Westhuizen, Johann van Eeden, Boysie van Staden and Shaun Wood are gearing up to compete in their 40th Comrades Marathon.

Three of these athletes will be doing their 40th consecutive Comrades race, namely Mike, Wietsche and Shaun.

Achieving Comrades Quadruple Green Number status is no easy feat as only 12 runners have earned the coveted accomplishment.

They runners who hold the title are: Dave Rogers (45 finishes), Barry Holland (44 finishes), Louis Massyn (44 finishes), Alan Robb (42 finishes), Clive Crawley (42 finishes), Dave Lowe (42 finishes), David Williams (41 finishes), Kenny Craig (40 finishes), Riel Hugo (40 finishes), Zwelitsha Gono (40 finishes), Tommy Neitski (40 finishes) and Vic Boston (40 finishes).

The concept of Comrades Marathon Green Numbers was first introduced in 1972.

As they are members of an exclusive band of individuals who have experienced a special relationship with the race, they will retain their Comrades Marathon race number in perpetuity.

The criteria for inclusion in the Comrades Marathon Green Number Club Roll of Honour is three Comrades wins, five Comrades gold medals or 10 or more Comrades finishes.

CMA’s general manager, Chris Fisher, thanked the runners for their passion for The Ultimate Human Race.

“Each of you has showcased the true spirit of the Comrades Marathon through sheer grit, determination and hard work. We wish you well as you conquer this year’s edition of the most iconic road running race in the world.”
