Bellair’s new chairman aims to re-enforce the ‘C’ in CPF

Naidoo and the CPF exco would like to thank former chairman, Peter Govender, his wife, Molly Govender who was the CPF secretary and former treasurer, Piet Naude, who all served since 1994.

THE newly elected Bellair Community Police Forum (CPF) chairperson, Malcolm Naidoo, believes being part of the CPF is a good move to keep the community close and safe.

“I also want to create a safe environment for the children,” he said. Naidoo was elected as chairman in March.

He was part of the executive committee and a member of the CPF since 2009. CPF’s are forums established in terms of section 19(1) of the SAPS Act 68 of 1995.

A CPF is a group of people from different communities and police representatives who meet to discuss safety problems in their communities.

It is also a platform where community members, organisations and the police meet to discuss local crime prevention initiatives.

Naidoo has been a resident in the Queensburgh area since 2003, but his family originally lived in the area before being removed by the apartheid group areas act.

“My whole family is involved with community development,” he said.

When asked how different will his approach be as chairperson, he said the key ingredient is ‘community’.

“Today people have lost the element of community, people don’t know who their neighbours are and that means they don’t know who the criminals are.”

Naidoo said the role of the CPF is to work in partnership with the police and hold them accountable.

“I feel that there is a lack of trust between the SAPS and the community,” he said.

He said that the new Bellair police station commander and new CPF exco will have a fresh approach to dealing with issues and try to gain the trust of the community again.

CPF meetings take place third Tuesday of every month at the Tafta Hall, at 6pm.
