Fabulous reads – Novel hacks into techno serial killer’s world

Book review: The Steel Kiss by Jeffrey Deaver.

The Steel Kiss (Lincoln Rhyme #12), Jeffrey Deaver, Jonathan Ball Publishers, ISBN: 978 1 473 61848 0

IF you weren’t terrified of your electronics murdering you in your sleep, after this novel you will be!

The Steel Kiss is the 12th instalment in the Lincoln Rhyme thriller series. That is 12 books worth of truly remarkable characters doused in a spunky and upbeat writing style that will make you laugh and grimace all in one page.

Detective Amelia Sachs is hot on the trail of an elusive murderer when her chase is disrupted by a truly horrific escalator accident. She abandons her chase to assist the trapped victim – and Deaver spares none of the gory details. For the detective, freak accidents are rarely just accidents and with the help of Rhyme, a former NYPD Detective turned Forensic Consultant, they begin a chase like no other.

The targets are found murdered by common everyday products, items that can be hacked and turned into deadly and gruesome weapons. The victims are seemingly unconnected and the reader is given a few disturbing inklings into the killer’s psyche along the book’s journey.

We see the return of a number of familiar characters with their own cases and personal story lines woven in. It was an enjoyable book with unseen conclusions and a few misleading passages that completely threw me off from the perpetrator. A round of applause for Mr Deaver!
