UPDATE: Fire guts Pinetown family’s home

Neighbours attempted to assist with hosepipes but the fire spread too quickly.

A PINETOWN family was left devastated after a fire ripped through and gutted their home this afternoon.

The home owner, Wayne Naidu, said his wife, Jenny, was at home when she smelt something burning. She then noticed flames coming from their daughter’s room. Fortunately the daughter was not at home during the incident.

Jenny ran to the neighbours, who contacted the Pinetown Fire Department. “Other neighbours came to assist with hosepipes, but the fire spread so quickly,” said Naidu.

Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care said they were attending to an accident scene when they noticed thick, black smoke billowing from a complex.

“The owner of the property informed paramedics and breakdown operators that their pet bird was at the rear of the house. Without hesitation they swooped in and moved the pet to safety,” said Jamieson.

The parrot, Rio, was rescued in the nick of time as the food and water bowls in its cage had already started melting.

The local fire department had managed to doused the flames by the time Highway Mail arrived at the scene.

“I can’t believe it. I just can’t believe that everything can be gone in an instant like that. Thank you to everyone who attended for their support and put in efforts to help put the fire out,” said Naidu.
