Highway Aged faces financial crisis
Highway Aged is appealing to the community to support their non-profit organisation.
DESPITE allegations of managerial corruption at Highway Aged in Pinetown, the non-profit organisation has revealed its financial crisis and is calling on the community for assistance.
A concerned Highway senior citizen wrote a letter to the Highway Mail highlighting several concerns, including the day-to-day running costs of the facility, non-distribution of fundraising hampers, lack of payment to staff and cash donations.
“What has happened to the dedicated staff, management and directorship who used to control this wonderful organisation? Only a few of that staff remain. What, where or who, exactly are all the donations received going to? Surely all donations are intended solely for the Highway area. Highway Aged is sponsored by Woolworths, Spar and lucrative donations given by many other companies and public annually,” said the senior citizen.
She added that she realised that there are running costs involved but surely little is spent on repairs and the things of importance to running this organisation successfully.
“I know of people who paid for Christmas hampers which they have not received. Phone lines have been cut because of non-payment. This is their main source of income, how can any telesales be made for fund-raising? Staff members are not paid, yet still show for work, how do they feed and clothe their families,” added the senior citizen.
Kevin Moodley, general manager at Highway Aged denied the allegations saying the situation had been misread, however, admitted that Highway Aged is in dire financial straits.
“Highway Aged had undergone some financial difficulties recently due to the lack of public support in respect of fund-raising. Our operational costs have increased, however, current management, staff and volunteers from this organisation has raised this organisation to new heights over the past three years and have upheld the guidelines provided by the Constitution and met all our objectives,” said Moodley.
