Meeting set to address rampant crime in Westville

Residents are urged to attend a meeting tonight in response to the recent spate of violent crimes in Westville.

DUE to the number and violent nature of crimes in the Westville area deputy mayor, Fawsia Peer, has requested a public meeting in the committee room at Turro Hall tonight ( Monday, 23) at 7 pm. Residents are urged to attend the meeting.

In a recent attack, an ADT response officer was shot and killed in Matapan Road on Saturday morning. Also on Saturday, four armed men held up a family of five in Berghiel Road.

Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires said a 36-year-old man was returning home when he was accosted by four men.

“The man had just parked his vehicle when these men, all armed and wearing balaclavas held him up. One remained with him and the other three went inside the house and held up his wife and three young children.” 

“They instructed the wife to show them where everything was, they took laptops, cellphones and other items,” said Squires.

The men fled in the victim’s Mercedes which was recovered shortly in Clermont. Squires said response and support from SAPS and neighbourhood watches was very good.
