Try not to speed along Inanda Road

Letter to the Editor - week ending 23 December 2016.

EDITOR – We were house hunting for my mother in law’s new retirement home recently and looked at several gated estates along the Hillcrest, Inanda Road area.

What shocked me was how noisy Inanda Road sounded like from some of the homes that we looked at. I noticed that the vehicles that made the most noise pollution and disturbances in the residential areas were cars going very fast as well as motorbikes and trucks exceeding the speed limit. I have often seen cars abusing the dual carriage way of Inanda Road and using it as though it was the N2 Highway. Despite the fact that there are several right turns off Inanda Road, sometimes drivers need to be in the right hand lane.

I see the speed limit of Inanda Road is set at 60km and have to confess that when I try to drive 60km along Inanda Road it feels very slow and as though I could be obstructing the free flow of traffic. I now try to stick in the left hand lane. Cars come screaming past me and I often see they are going at least 100km per hour through the Kirtlington and Cotswold stretch.

Until I looked at places for my mom, I also sped along the road to get from A to B as quickly as possible and never once thought of the local schools, the nursery schools, the retirement communities, estates and residents that live along or near to the road. It was all about me and where I needed to go.

I humbly request that perhaps as residents of the Upper Highway area, we could be more mindful of the fact that Inanda Road is actually a residential road and not a highway. When we speed along the road it is not only dangerous for ourselves and others, but we create noise pollution in our residential area.
