ER24’s top six safety tips for the holidays

Use these handy tips to guide you on your way to a safe and sound holiday.

ER24 urged Highway residents to exercise caution and pay attention to their surroundings during the festive season.

Tips for around the home:

“If you are going away on holiday, ensure all doors and gates to your home are locked and that your windows are closed,” said Chitra Bodasing Harduth, spokesman for ER24. Switch off unnecessary switches around the house and turn off your geyser. Remove all post and newspapers from your post box and have someone you trust remove them on a regular basis. Do not leave lights on, rather install a timer if you are able to. Remember to activate your alarm system.

Cash holders:

A number of people draw large sums of cash during the festive season. Rather swipe one of your bank cards while shopping instead. If you have to draw cash, be aware of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious at the ATM, rather use another one. Do not let anyone distract you while you are withdrawing cash. Also watch that you are not being followed when you leave the ATM.

Shopping centres:

“Shopping centres are busy at this time of year. While you may be in a rush to finish your shopping, you must be alert at all times. Keep a close eye on your belongings and ensure your vehicle is locked,” said Bodasing.

Be vigilant while driving:

Always be alert while driving. Watch that you are not being followed. Be vigilant when stopping at traffic lights or stop streets. If you suspect that you are being followed, go to the closest police station or to a busy area. Keep all of your valuables in the boot of your vehicle and ensure the boot is locked. Keep your doors locked and windows closed. You should also leave ample space between you and the car in front of you in order to escape should you need to.

Drive safely:

When driving, avoid speeding. Also ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy. Refrain from drinking alcohol and driving. Remember to keep a first aid kit in your vehicle as well.

On the highway:

Do not stop on highways or areas that look unsafe. “If something is wrong with your vehicle, try to get to a busy area if possible. Save roadside assistance numbers on your phone as well,” concluded Bodasing.
