Woman shot five times, boyfriend arrested

The victim was shot five times in the head and was found lying in a pool of blood outside her place of employment.

A 31-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly shot his girlfriend five times in the head outside her place of employment in Rossburgh, on Tuesday. This as the world commemorates 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children.

eThekwini Inner South Cluster Task Team recovered a car belonging to the accused in Ilk Road, Croftdene, Chatsworth on Wednesday, 30 November. According to police reports, the car was abandoned in Chatsworth following the incident.

“According to members at the scene, the victim (26) was found on South Coast Road outside her place of employment, next to a VW Polo, which is believed to belong to the victim. The victim sustained five gunshot wounds to her head and was declared dead at the scene by emergency services personnel. The killer fled the scene in his vehicle, leaving behind the 7.65 9mm short firearm with no serial number. The firearm was recovered at the scene, along with five spent 9mm cartridges,” said eThekwini Inner South Cluster communications officer, Priya Nunkumar.

Within hours of the killing, a team from the Brighton Beach SAPS led by Detective Head, Lt-Col Jayson McGray, apprehended the man in Chatsworth on Tuesday night. The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage. The suspect has been arrested and charged for murder at Brighton Beach SAPS. The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, Friday, 2 December.

eThekwini Inner South Cluster Commander, Major-General Keerath Nunkumar, commended the officers on their swift reaction to apprehend the murder suspect. “Well done to Lt-Col McGray and his team, as well as the task team on their diligent work. We will ensure that justice is served and the suspect is sentenced,” he said.
