Two dogs die during weekend fireworks

The Kloof and Highway SPCA urges owners to visit its premises to check for their missing pets.

TWO dogs were killed, another was seriously injured and more than 40 stray animals are housed at the Kloof and Highway SPCA due to the fireworks at the weekend.

“Owners with missing pets must please come to the Kloof and Highway SPCA as soon as possible and check for their animals in our kennels. An owner is the best possible person to identify their own pet,” said Lisa Mörck, the PR and outreach officer at the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

In total. there were 43 stray animals at the Kloof and Highway SPCA. Of those animals, 32 were dogs, 10 were cats and one stray duck. Eleven of these animals were happily re-united with their families and only one of the dogs was microchipped.

More than 20 lost reports have been made by concerned owners regarding the animals that had gone missing due to the fireworks. The NPO’s inspectors were on standby this weekend and the emergency phone received more than 50 calls regarding stray animals. “We are very sad to report that three animals were hit by cars, two of which died and the third dog’s owner was located and the dog was rushed to a vet.”

“We appeal to those using fireworks to be mindful of animals – not forgetting wildlife, their neighbours and community members who may also suffer and to abide by the laws and regulations pertaining to the use of fireworks.

“The Animals Protection Act clearly states that it is illegal for any person to terrify any animal. Any deliberate act of frightening or harming animals involving the use of fireworks may lead to prosecution under the Animals Protection Act, 71 of 1962,” said Mörck.

Stray and lost animals can be taken to the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s standby kennels 24 hours a day. For injured animals or emergencies, contact 031 764 1212/3 during office hours or on 073 335 9322 after hours.
