Woman (76) scammed at Pinetown ATM

The victim went online and discovered that someone made purchases for more than R 30 000 from her account.

A MAN (41) was arrested by Pinetown detectives for theft and fraud on Wednesday, 26 October.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Capt Bongumusa Manqele, it is alleged the 76-year-old woman was using an ATM on Friday, 21 October in Pinetown and the transaction was unsuccessful.

“The victim decided to leave the machine and went back home and on Monday, 24 October, she realised that she had a card belonging to another person in her possession.

“The victim went online and discovered that someone had made purchases of more than R 30 000 from her account, R 64 000 was also transferred from her account to another account,” said Manqele.

A case of theft and fraud was opened at the Pinetown SAPS for further investigation.

“The detectives traced the suspect and he was apprehended at his place of employment in KwaDabeka. The suspect will be charged for theft and fraud and is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon,” added Manqele.
