KwaNyuswa gardening project blossoms

Yenzanathi Community Uplifts Project appeals for seeds and seedlings for its gardening project.

KWANYUSWA NPO, Yenzanathi Community Uplifts Project recently received a donation of 0,5 hectares of land which will be used for their gardening project.

Yenzanathi was founded by KwaNyuswa resident, Lydia Hlophe, in 2007 to assist underprivileged people.

“We started assisting 10 families through our soup kitchen which we host every Tuesday and Friday. We now feed 65 households,” said Hlophe.

She said Food Forward and Shoprite assisted them with food for the soup kitchen.

The NPO has since initiated a project to assist child-headed families, unemployed people and grannies who look after their grandchildren.

“We have an internet cafe which was sponsored by the Social Development Department and also trained five young people, who work at the cafe, with computer skills.

“The land was given to us by one of our beneficiaries, Bongani Blose who also works in the gardening project. National Development Agency (NDA) helped us with fencing the land and donated seeds and bought us tools to encourage the one home, one garden initiative.

“Shoprite is currently training 20 people, 18 women and two men with gardening skills and they also bought us more tools and seedlings.”

Hlophe said they still have a large space of land and they would like to plant more vegetables which they can cook for their soup kitchens and sell some of them as part of their income generating project.

“We are appealing to any person or companies that can help us with butternut, spinach, carrots and beetroot seeds as well as broccoli and cauliflower seedlings.”

People who would like to assist with seeds or donation, can contact Hlophe on 073 122 2632.
