THE Open Door Crisis Care Centre’s lay counselling eight-week course will start on Saturday, 1 October .

This course is a must for lay counsellors, neighbourhood watch volunteers, educators and community workers who are involved with men, women and children who face challenges in their homes or schools as well as for those who would like to improve their own skills in dealing with conflict, work and social related problems. “The course offers psychology students hands-on training and is recommended by lecturers in the various universities and colleges. The course is aligned to SAQU standards,” said Thora Mansfield, director of the Open Door Crisis Care Centre.

The course teaches participants basic counselling skills, dealing with conflict, addressing social issues of rape, domestic violence, child abuse as well as training on the various Acts and Bills including the Sexual Offences Act, the Domestic Violence Bill, the Children’s Act and the Trafficking in Persons Act. “In excess of 5 000 men and women have undergone a life-changing experience through this course,” said Thora.
