Three arrested for New Germany hijacking

The car was recovered by Empangeni police.

A CAR which was stolen in New Germany on Wednesday, 10 August was recovered in Empangeni.

According to Pinetown SAPS communications officer, Cpt Bongumusa Manqele, it is alleged that the victim (28) and his friend were at the New Germany Nature Reserve when they were accosted by three men, one in possession of a gun.

“They allegedly demanded the car keys from the victim. The victim’s Toyota Etios was taken by the hijackers at gunpoint and no shots were fired,” he said.

On Sunday, 14 August, Empangeni police were doing routine duties in their area when they stopped a suspicious looking car with three occupants inside.

“Upon checking the vehicle, police discovered that it was hijacked in Pinetown. The three men were immediately arrested and charged for possession of property suspected to be stolen,” said Manqele.

The men appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 August and were remanded in custody.

On Monday, 23 August, members of the Pinetown Trio Task Team proceeded to Empangeni and all three men were taken to Pinetown police station.

The three men aged between 22 and 37 are expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court.
