Clean sweep for WOB seconds

During a close match between the Westville Old Boys ad Richards bay, the local team came out triumphant.

THE Westville Old Boys’ 2nd team took on Richards Bay for the Keith Parkinson Trophy, part of the Castle Murray Cup finals last Saturday

The match was at Northwood Crusaders with a noon kick off with a booming crowd and atmosphere. From the kick off Richards Bay used its forwards to intimidate the WOB pack. After some solid defence withstanding the onslaught for the first 10 minutes, the deadlock was broken when a penalty was given. Richards Bay managed the shot and took a 3 – 0 lead. Another penalty gave Richards Bay a 6 – 0 lead. After encouragement from the coach under the poles, the local team started to turn things around.

After a mammoth 50m penalty from flyhalf, Brandon Hart, and a great team try from Mikey Elion, which was converted by Hart once again, WOB took a deserved 10 – 6 lead into the break. Shane Bezuidenhout crossed the try line for another try and kicking ace Hart converted before putting another penalty between the uprights.

Richards Bay had a comeback but the final score was 20 – 18 to Westville Old Boys. Captain Burgess was awarded the forwards man of the match and Hart won for backline player. Coach Grant Anger was elated with the performance. The club chairman and rugby director Joey Stander fought back the tears as he expressed the huge step for the club, especially from the 2nd team. The win comes on the back of winning the league and the Brian Irvine Cup earlier in the season. “The 1st team finished third in the league this year and 2017 promises to be a year for the books from the ever growing club in the heart of Westville. A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved this season in creating a successful year,” said Joey Stander.
