Highway College celebrates 25 years

The school was founded by Chris Barnard in 1991.

HIGHWAY College celebrated its 25th birthday on Monday, 1 August.

The school was founded in 1991 by Chris Barnard who wanted to establish a school in Pinetown which adhered to Biblical values. He acquired the school buildings from the former House of Delegates which was in the process of disbanding, at just the time that Barnard was setting out to establish his school.

The House of Delegates was the apartheid structure which was responsible for Indian education and the buildings which were given to Highway College were those of the former Pinetown Indian High School.

Today the school, which is situated at the corner of Bevis and Oppenheimer Roads in central Pinetown, occupies only the remnants of the old Indian High School. Many of the old buildings, and grounds on which they stood, have been lost to road and industrial development in the area.

Highway College has grown over the years and now fills an important niche in the provision of independent school education in the broader Highway area.

The school staff and pupils marked this special occasion at an assembly at the school. There was cupcakes, birthday cake and refreshments for all.
