Dam levels still low despite heavy rainfall

More cold weather is expected for the rest of this week.

AFTER the downpour experienced by Durbanites these past few days, a welcome reprieve is expected, according to South African Weather Service, but this does not bode well for the feeder dams.

The weather forecast predicted it to continue raining throughout today with cloudy and overcast weather for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with chances of showers on Saturday.

Umgeni Water has noted that Inanda Dam is now sitting at 68.09 per cent capacity, having received 30mm of rain within the past 24 hours..

Despite the recent deluge throughout KZN, Midmar Dam has dropped by 0.5 per cent since April. Midmar Dam supplies water to Pinetown, Cato Ridge, KwaXimba, Umbumbulu, Georgedale, Hammarsdale, Shongweni, Salem, Umlazi and parts of Folweni. The dam only experienced 6.5mm of rain within the last 24 hours.

Albert Falls Dam is lower than it was in April, with water levels sitting at 27.49 per cent. A drop of 6.51 per cent. This dam supplies water to Durban North, Umhlanga, Verulam, KwaMashu, Ntuzuma, Newlands, Westville, Reservoir Hills, KwaDabeka, Clermont, Pinetown, Queensburgh, Chatsworth, Umlazi and parts of Folweni. According to Umgeni Water, the dam only received 3.04mm of rain in the last 24 hours.
