PHOTOS: Heavy rains causes havoc in Durban roads

Paramedics have urged motorists to drive cautiously in this wet weather.

THE constant rain in and around Durban has kept paramedics extremely busy over the past few days.

Rescue Care Paramedics attended to multiple collisions between Saturday night and Monday evening, some being minor collisions and some more serious.

Ceron Lennox, advanced life support paramedic, said although the rain is much needed in the province, they have seen a marked increase in the amount of collisions.

“The common areas where most collisions occurred were the M7 between the N2 and the N3, on the M13 near the Westwood mall and the N2 both North and South bound between Spaghetti Junction and the M7.

“A mud slide had occurred on the N2 near the M7 which caused absolute chaos due to collisions between vehicles and vehicles that were broken down on the freeway,” he said.

On Monday morning, three people were injured in two separate accidents on the M7 west bound. Lennox said the vehicles rolled through the median and landed on the east bound carriageway.

“Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that three vehicles, two cars and a truck, had collided causing the BMW to roll through the median into oncoming traffic. “One person sustained minor injuries,” he said.

The second accident occurred on the M7 where a car rolled. One person was seriously injured and another person sustained minor injuries.

They were all treated on scene and taken to various Durban hospitals. Rescue Care paramedics has urged motorists to slow down, extend their following distances in the rain and ensure their vehicles are in good working order.

“We advise people should check their tyres and ensure they are not worn smooth and checking that their headlights and windscreen wipers are in working order,” added Lennox.
