RCL Foods feeds hundreds for Mandela Day

Wholesome food was handed out to members of the Highway community for Mandela Day.

HUNDREDS of people were fed thanks to the five soup kitchens which were set up and hosted by 55 employees from the Westville head office of RCL Foods for Mandela Day.

Warren Farrer, the CSI Executive for the RCL Foods Group, said the project started by first meeting with the communities and finding out their most pressing needs which were food, youth and job creation. “Right now, they just need food. Many of the school children would normally get a meal at school but with the school holidays many of them are going hungry. A lot of people are impoverished,” he said.

The group of caring staff split up to serve the communities in Ward 4, 5, 6, 7 and 91 last Friday from 9am to 1pm, going above and beyond the normal 67 minutes. For those that were unable to travel to the soup kitchens, a truck was sent out with food and was given to those in need.
