He was remanded in custody until 2 August for further investigation.

THE Provincial Tracking Team worked around the clock tracing a wanted rhino poacher who was found in possession of a rhino horn in November 2011.

Suraj Rampersad (43) was arrested and later released on bail in 2015 but he never went back to court.

A warrant for his arrest was issued and, according to the Provincial Police Spokesman,Lt Col Thulani Zwane, he has been on the run since last year.

Rampersad was found in Newlands East where he was re-arrested while withdrawing money from an ATM.

He appeared today in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court facing four counts of illegal rhino hunting, fraud and possession of rhino horns value at R100 000.

He was remanded into custody until 2 August 2016.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General, Bhekinkosi Langa praised the investigating team for their effort in making sure that Rampersad was brought back to court to face his charges. “I also appeal to the community to continue supporting us in the fight against crime by reporting those who kill rhinos and dehorn them,” he said.
