Kevin Ellis is living his dancing dream

"There's no need for me to colour my hair or tan my skin. I just love to be me," added Kevin Ellis - designer, dancer and model scout.

LOCAL designer, dancer and model scout, Kevin Ellis, is living his dreams at age 54.

Kevin’s passion for dance dates back as far as he can remember. However, he was always in the limelight for his modelling and fashion skills but never took his passion for dancing seriously until later in his life. He took up line dancing with a friends earlier last year and competed in big competitions.

Kevin returned from the UK as the 2015 Advanced Silver World Champion at the World Dance Masters’ Championships in Blackpool last August. He said after the championships, he stayed on and travelled for a bit – he went to see shows, learn about costumes and music and visited huge departmental stores.

Since his return, Kevin participated in the KZN Meltdown Solo Style competition in February and won gold in the the elite duo, showcase duo and the rattling quattro categories. He also participated in the Gauteng Step Up competition on 5 March and won gold and honours in the silver advanced men’s division and in the flaming quattro section. Kevin participated in the 2016 South African Masters’ Championships in the Western Cape on 14 May and won gold in the advanced silver division. He was styled by Gareth Greaves from X Factor SA season one, who also hand-made all of his hats and costumes.

Kevin plans to compete in the World Champs in Blackpool again in August this year, and is leaving a little earlier to train in Ireland.

“It’s all been wonderful, with fashion, choreography and dancing, I’ve been able to balance my passion and my dreams. I’m really enjoying life and am at a very happy place right now,” said Kevin.

Kevin trains with dance coach, Serena Rajkumar, who is from Solo Rhythm in Westville. She is a former World Dance Champion and is also highly-qualified in aqua aerobics.

At his age, Kevin said he just wants to encourage people to follow their dreams. He loves to dance and believes that dancing is keeping him young. He also agreed that eating healthily, daily exercise and plenty of rest also plays its part in helping him feel young.

“There’s no need for me to colour my hair or tan my skin. I just love to be me,” added Kevin.
