Kearsney and Maritzburg College faced off

Kearsney College won the rugby match but lost the hockey against Maritzburg College at the weekend.

KEASRNEY College enjoyed a good sports weekend against Maritzburg College.

Maritzburg College’s first team hosted Kearsney’s team on a typical Midlands winter afternoon with conditions conducive to good schoolboy rugby. The crowds were not disappointed as the two teams produced seven tries and some good open rugby play. Kearsney came out strongly and dominated the first half as the half-time score of 21-0 suggests. They scored three tries in the first half from Dylan Richardson, David Weaver and Cameron Ritchie – all converted by James Sutherland.

In the second half, Maritzburg College rallied and came back, but Kearsney’s resolute defence kept them at bay. Kearsney had two unconverted tries from Matthew Blair and James Sutherland in the second half. Maritzburg College replacement, Mjara, scored the first try with the second from a line-out maul drive. Both were converted by Van Blerk. The final score was 31-14 in Kearsney’s favour.

In hockey news, it was always going to be a challenging fixture for Kearsney’s first team as the College team are currently in a good patch of form. Kearsney controlled play for most of the game but eventually lost the match.

Kearsney went 1-0 up early from a Kyle Koenig goal, but soon after College equalised from a confusing passage of play. College then went 2-1 up through another soft goal by Kearsney for a half-time score of 2-1.

Kearsney continued to control the game with College looking dangerous through the visitors’ mistakes. College scored another soft goal. Kearsney did not stop fighting and pushed hard to get back into the game. Eventually, with about five minutes to play, James Stamatis scored from the penalty spot to bring Kearsney back into the game with some time still on the clock, but College was able to hold out until the end with some interesting defending. The game ended 3-2 to College.
