The dagga was being transported from Durban to Cape Town.

SIX men were arrested during a joint operation between Hammarsdale police, Mpumalanga police, the Pietermaritzburg K9 Unit and SSS Security for possession of dagga worth R1.2-million on Thursday morning.

According to Maj Thulani Zwane, police received information about a truck, sedan and a bakkie transporting dagga from Durban to Cape Town.

“Police speedily proceeded to N3 freeway between Hammarsdale and Cato Ridge and on arrival they spotted the vehicles fitting the description parked at a petrol station near Cato Ridge.”

Zwane said police approached the men and upon searching the vehicles, 17 bags of dagga were found in the truck and the bakkie.

“All six men were arrested and charged for possession of dagga. The street value of the dagga is estimated at R1.2-million,” added Zwane.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, praised the members for their dedication and commitment to rooting out drugs in the province.

“They showed that they are dedicated in their work and we urge the community to continue working with the police by providing information that will lead to the arrest and recovery of drugs,” she said.

The six men will appear in the Mpumalanga Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, Friday, 6 May.
